ShakeAlarm® is now available for your home!

The ShakeAlarm® Earthquake Early Warning System for your Home – Q&A

What is it?

ShakeAlarm® is a cost effective Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) that has been developed since 2009 that specifically warns you, and your family, of an approaching earthquake before the shaking starts – this technology allows you, your family and loved ones to seek cover, hold on and protect children, seconds before the shaking starts.

How does it work?

It works by identifying the faster, but non-destructive P-Wave that leads the slower moving, destructive S-Wave. All decisions made by ShakeAlarm® are done locally at the specific installation site in order to avoid delays associated with trying to manage warnings over a network; as a result of this ability, ShakeAlarm® can send out warnings to your phone, email, SMS, APP, as well as shut down gas, electricity and water at your home in less than a second, once the earthquake has been identified as damaging.

How reliable is ShakeAlarm® Home?

Since ShakeAlarm® came to the market in 2009, there has not been a single false alarm. The first commercial system protects 100,000 users of the George Massey Tunnel every day, since 2009.

What is included with ShakeAlarm®Home?

  • Central Processor
  • 6 channels of data acquisition for two tri-axial accelerometers
  • Adjustable thresholds for shutoff activations
  • Cabling and brackets
  • Ongoing health monitoring (to make sure your ShakeAlarm® is always running properly)
  • Email, SMS, APP earthquake notifications for everyone in your household
  • Peace of mind knowing that you will now have time to seek cover, hold on and keep your family safe and secure before the shaking starts.

Are there any options for ShakeAlarm® Home?

Yes; your home can have gas, water and electrical shutoffs installed in order to mitigate fire/flood damage after the shaking stops. A large percentage of the damage that occurs with an earthquake is attributed to the fires and floods afterwards. We can also attach additional users to your ShakeAlarm® Home system that do not live in the household. Other options are available, such as structural monitoring solutions for homes built before the earthquake building codes were implemented.

Is there a benefit to my insurance if I install a system like this in my home?

Yes; most insurers will give a 10 – 15% discount on the earthquake portion of your insurance. We work with some large insurers in the Vancouver area, and should someone run into problems with their current insurance provider, we will be more than happy to direct you to folks that will provide you with suitable insurance reductions.

What do I need to use ShakeAlarm® at my home?

  • 120VAC power
  • Wireless connectivity to the internet
  • Satellite and Cellular options are also available for communications if wireless is not
  • Exposed foundation walls

How much does ShakeAlarm® Home cost?

ShakeAlarm® Home represents a dramatic reduction in the cost of this technology versus our Commercial and Industrial systems.

If you purchase the system outright, ShakeAlarm® will cost $9500.00 + $55.00 per month to run the service. In the lower mainland, installation will be $450.00 and take approximately 3 hours.

If you use our service (where we supply the equipment) the cost will be $85.00/month, with a service term attached. The same installation cost of $450.00 applies.

For our customers on Vancouver Island, our goal is to keep the installation cost the same as what we are doing in the Lower Mainland by setting up a number of installations on a single trip.

Options, such as gas/water/electricity shut off, elevator grounding etc. Are quoted on the basis of what each specific property requires. Typically, you can expect another $4 – 6,000 for all the shut off options and installation, but you may not need all of these options. Please give us a call to discuss your specific property.

Additional users, outside of your residence, but attached to your ShakeAlarm® system, are billed at $5.00 per month, per user.

Summary

We are delighted that we can bring this potentially lifesaving technology to EVERYONE! Please be aware that we may make changes as we progress, but the reliability and repeatability of ShakeAlarm® will never be compromised, but will always evolve. Once you factor in the savings on your earthquake insurance, ShakeAlarm® pays for itself, AND gives you great peace of mind.
